Sunrise Above the Clouds

We began climbing in darkness. Headlamps, rope checks, the sound of crampons on hard snow — our world narrowed to the next careful step.

“At the top, achievement did not feel loud. It felt completely still.”

The ascent had lived on our calendar for nearly two years. We trained before work, learned to turn back when conditions were wrong, and promised one another that reaching the summit would never matter more than coming home safely.

We arrived just before sunrise. The horizon turned coral, then gold, while the valleys remained filled with blue shadow. I looked at the constellation dial on my wrist and laughed at the strange symmetry of it: a small map of the night at the exact moment the night was ending.

We stayed for ten minutes. There was no dramatic celebration, only hot tea, tired smiles, and a view neither of us tried to describe. Some moments become smaller when explained. We decided to keep that one intact.
