My father never missed a train home, a school performance, or the call I made after a difficult exam. He had a way of making sacrifice look ordinary, which is why it took me years to understand how much of his life he had quietly rearranged for mine.
“My graduation gift was for the person who made graduation possible.”
The evening before graduation, I handed him the ChronoAstra. He laughed and said the day was supposed to be about me. I told him it already was — and that this was how I wanted to remember who had carried me there.
After the ceremony, I found him outside the old stone hall. Before anyone could organize us into a photograph, he wrapped both arms around me. The blue strap flashed against my gown, and for a few seconds neither of us said anything.
The diploma is framed in my apartment. But when I think about that day, I remember his hand across my shoulder and the expression on his face.
