The First Morning

The room was quiet in a way hospital rooms never are. Just the two of us and a pale strip of morning light.

I remember counting fingers and losing track and starting again.

The dial is the sky over Lisbon at 07:06 — the exact minute she arrived. It's the closest thing I have to a photograph of a feeling.
