He never made speeches. He put a small box on the table between the plates and said, 'This one's yours now.'
Inside was a watch he'd had made the year I turned one — the sky over Copenhagen on the night I arrived, mapped in miniature under sapphire.
I wear it every day. My daughter is four. She already knows which stars are hers.
